Texas Congressman Calls Transgender Congrass Woman "Mr." Twice During Hearing

During a House Foreign Affairs Committee meeting earlier this week, Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas) referred to Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Delaware), the first openly transgender member of Congress, as "Mr. McBride."

In response, McBride addressed Self as "Madam Chair." This prompted Rep. Bill Keating (D-Massachusetts) to interject, requesting that Self correctly address Congrasswoman McBride.

When Rep. Self repeated the misgendering, Keating accused him of indecency and insisted on proper recognition before proceeding. Rep. Self then decided to abruptly terminate the meeting.

Following the incident, McBride expressed her commitment to serving Delaware, stating that despite such interactions, her dedication to her constituents remains unwavering.

Rep. Self defended his actions by referencing a policy that recognizes only two sexes, male and female.

This event has sparked discussions about respect and recognition of gender identity within congressional proceedings.
