Texas A&M University Bans Drags Shows On Campus
Last week, the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, which oversees 11 universities across the state, passed a resolution banning drag shows from all its facilities that are open to the public and “involve sexualised, vulgar or lewd conduct”.
This comes after Texas A&M has received backlash over the past several years for hosting the infamous annual Drag Show, Draggieland.
In the past few years, Draggieland has been held on campus at the Rudder Theatre. Sparking outrage and frustration across the state.
Texas A&M University is considered one of the most conservative and patriotic universities in the state. It's widely regarded as the university of the working bluecollar men and women. And that's why their annual dragshow, Draggieland, didn't sit right with many of their alumni.
In the resolution, the Board of Regents stated the following:
"The Board finds that it is inconsistent with the System’s mission and core values of its Universities, including the value of respect for others, to allow Special Event Venues of the Universities to be used for drag shows that involve biological males dressing in women’s clothing, wearing exaggerated female make up and/or exaggerated prosthetics meant to parody the female body type, and that are: open to the public; involve sexualized, vulgar or lewd conduct; and involve conduct that demeans women (Drag Show Events)"
