Six Texas schools make the list of Top 75 Most Valuable Athletics Programs
CNBC recently conducted an analysis of the 75 most valuable college athletics programs in the country, and six of them hail from the lonestar state with two in the top ten.
College athletics is at an all-time high, and some programs are generating hundreds of millions of dollars each year, but which programs are at the top end of this list? Which program is the most valuable in Texas? Keep reading below for the answers to all of these questions.
The revenue figures below are from the Department of Education’s Equity in Athletics Data Analysis and the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics for the fiscal year 2023. The list is reflective of the current enterprise value of each program, starting with a base revenue multiple of four for all institutions, and then adjusting the multiple for variables, including conference affiliation, estimated NIL spend, school subsidies, number of alumni and other factors that can catalyze future revenue growth and profitability.
Unsurprisingly, the SEC and the Big Ten conference dominate the top end of this list, and the top two Texas schools hail from the might SEC.
The University of Texas at Austin came in an no.2 on the list, right behind Ohio State University. The Longhorns' valuation sits a $1.28 billion, with $271 million in revenue.
Texas A&M University came in at no.3 on the list with a valuation of $1.26 billion, and $279 million in revenue.
Texas Tech University came in at no.33 with a valuation of $619 million, and $147 million in revenue.
Up next is Texas Christian University at no.39 with a valuation of $542 million, and $149 million in revenue.
Second to last on the list at no.44 is Baylor University with a valuation of $513 million, and $137 million in revenue.
And last but not least at no. 65 is Southern Methodist University with a valuation of $327 million, and a merely $86 million in revenue.
