Dallas state rep. files bill to legalize recreational marijuana

State Representative Jessica González (D-Dallas) filed House Bill 1208, which would allow adults 21 and older to use, possess, and transport up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana for personal use only.

Adults would also be allowed to keep up to 10 ounces of cannabis in their residence, as long as it is stored in a secure location.

Smoking and consuming cannabis in a public place or in a car on a public road would not be allowed.

Packaging for cannabis products would be required to be in child-resistant packaging.

A 10 percent tax would be imposed on the sale of all cannabis and cannabis products.

The bill was filed for the upcoming legislative session on Jan. 14, 2025, and it was filed before Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick publicly called to ban THC products in Texas.

If passed, the bill would take effect on September 1, 2025.
